Behold some exercises for overcoming writer’s block. You too can become a writing machine.

In the following operations, the word ‘book’ may be replaced with the word magazine, or journal, or newspaper.

Open a random book to page 1. Read and copy line 22. Repeat across many books.

Think of a word. Open a book. Search for the first instance of that word. Copy the entire line containing that word. Repeat across many books, and use only one instance per book.

Open a random book and turn to page 5. Locate the first verb. Copy that verb and the following 10 words. Repeat across many books.

Choose a vowel or diphthong. Open a random book to page 9. Find the first instance of that vowel or diphthong. Copy the word in which it appears and the subsequent 9 words. Repeat across many books.

Open a random book and turn to a random page. Find the first instance of the letter B and copy the entire line containing it. Repeat across many books.

Open a random book and turn to page 13. Locate the first sentence containing a comma. Copy the sentence fragment preceding the comma. Repeat across many books.

Open a book and turn to page 30. Proceeding from there, locate the first sentence containing a number, either the numeral or spelled out. Copy the sentence fragment preceding that number.  Repeat across many books.
